چکیده

For the testing of the effect on the tsunami prevention facilities, a simplified method for tsunami risk assessment was suggested without wave run-up analysis. This method is proposed using calculated offshore tsunami waveform and field reconnaissance such as the seawall height, time necessary for residents’ evacuation and tsunami warning insurance. Then, two normalized values are evaluated; one is the ratio of calculated maximum tsunami height to seawall height, the other is the ratio of time between tsunami over-topping and evacuation completion to total time required for evacuation. These two values are used to qualitatively estimate the safety of residents and the effect of tsunami prevention facilities, eliminating the necessity to compute complicated tsunami run-up onshore.

Tsunami Vulnerability Mapping Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques: A Case Study of Kollam District, Kerala, India

Tsunamis are caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a sea. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions, landslides, glacier calvings, meteorite impacts and other disturbances above or below water have the potential to generate a tsunami. The coastal areas of Kollam district, the present study area was seriously affected by the catastr...

Influence of Flow Velocity on Tsunami Loss Estimation

Inundation depth is commonly used as an intensity measure in tsunami fragility analysis. However, inundation depth cannot be taken as the sole representation of tsunami impact on structures, especially when structural damage is caused by hydrodynamic and debris impact forces that are mainly determined by flow velocity. To reflect the influence of flow velocity in addition to inundation depth in...

Numerical Modeling of Tsunami Waves Associated With Worst Earthquake Scenarios of the Makran Subduction Zone in the Jask Port, Iran

The recent studies show that the past researches may have significantly underestimated earthquake and tsunami hazard in the Makran Subduction Zone (MSZ) and this region is potentially capable of producing major earthquakes. In this study, the worst case possible earthquake scenarios of the MSZ are simulated using fully nonlinear boussinesq model to investigate tsunami hazards on the Jask Port, ...

Chapter 4 . Tsunami Probability

Evaluating the probability of tsunami occurrence is a crucial step in the assessment of tsunamis hazards. Deterministic tsunami hazard studies involve hydrodynamic modeling of tsunami propagation, runup, and inundation from a particular source, usually defined as the maximum credible earthquake, landslide, or another tsunami trigger. Scenario-based modeling such as this is useful in emergency p...
